The calendar for introductory meetings is open! We’ll be taking clients starting in August 2025.

I’m happy to meet with you and see if we are a good fit. Generally, I only work with clients if I think the value I provide significantly exceeds the price of my service. While I know physicians best, I am open to working with other professionals who have substantial self-employment income.
-
I meet with clients through Google Meet, and other communication is generally managed through our client portal and email.
While I know some clients prefer to communicate over the phone, I have thus far been intentional in limiting the modes of communication. I think it’s important to streamline this to provide better service. -
I think it’s imperative that your expectations for my service are clear from Day 1. Before I ask a new client to sign a tax agreement, I ask him or her to upload their most recently filed tax return. The tax return itself doesn’t necessarily tell me everything, but if there are any red flags, I will clarify these with you and inform you if I would handle them differently.
The tax code is extraordinarily complicated, and it is challenging for preparers to gather all the information to prepare a tax return completely and accurately. I operate a smaller firm so that time constraints don’t lead me to take shortcuts. This may not always result in the biggest tax refund, but in the long term, it helps with implementing strategies that will lower your taxes in future years. -
No. To enhance the quality of tax planning, I think it’s important to track income and expenses throughout the year (not just in tax season). This is why I’ve included expense tracking in Xero at no extra charge.
If you use another tool, such as Quickbooks, no problem. I won’t actively manage it, but you can still grant me access so I can use it to inform recommendations throughout the year. I help clients with payroll exclusively through Gusto. You are permitted to continue using a different platform if you’re okay with managing payroll on your own. -
Most clients should file jointly, but there are exceptions. I do a filing status comparison for every couple to see what the tax liability is filing jointly and separately. Because filing separately results in additional time and complexity, this is subject to additional fees, outlined in the fee schedule.
Some couples may prefer to file separately for unrelated reasons (to minimize student loans, or because their financial lives are separate). Since there are rules that each spouse must follow (for instance, they both must take either the standard deduction or itemized deductions), I only file separately for one spouse if I also file for the second spouse.

Prior to launching TaxSmart MD, I worked as a tax manager at a financial planning company that specialized in working with student loan borrowers. I learned a lot, and I’m forever grateful for this experience.
As a result of my time in this role, I do feel comfortable implementing strategies that are useful to student loan borrowers (filing separately, filing late after an extension, and splitting income for residents of community property states). However, I don’t formulate recommendations for managing student loans. I know the basics, but that requires a higher level of expertise. Because student loans are so complex, and policy is changing constantly, borrowers need to work with a consultant or planner who makes this a part of their everyday practice. If you need student loan advice, I’m happy to refer you to a qualified student loan advisor. -
Generally, if it is a form that needs to be filed with your personal return (1040), I can do it.
Other forms and returns are considered case-by-case and are subject to additional charges. Currently, we’re not preparing or filing tax returns for C Corporations, Partnerships, or Trusts. I also do not file legal/informational forms for FBAR, nor do I file any legal documents with your Secretary of State. -
